A few basic questions to get started:
How large is the area you are watering?
Whether it's a flower bed or garden spot, measure the length and width of the area. For irregular areas you may have to approximate a little, but be precise to avoid dry spots.
What are you planting?
Beans are planted close together in the row, tomatoes are spaced out more, squash may be in mounds, flower beds may have intricate patterns for visual effect. Additionally, some plants use more water than others.
How many rows will you need?
For the traditional garden you just need to determine how many rows. Flower beds may be more comlex, but a simple diagram on paper should help you get the right number of emitters and rows.
Where is the water source?
Whether you're tapping into an automated sprinkler system or just running a garden hose to your mainline, this will determine how much mainline you need and what type of connector.
